Daboll’s Schoolmaster’s Assistant (1824)
Full title, Daboll’s Schoolmaster’s Assistant (1824), Improved And Enlarged, Being A Plain Practical System Of Arithmetic, Adapted To The United States (1824) with the inclusion of Samuel Green (n.d.) The Practical Accountant or Farmer’s And Mechanics Best Method of Book Keeping, For The Easy Instruction of Youth Designed As a Companion to Daboll’s Arithmetic. Publisher: Charles Starr, New York. Printers: Johnstone & Van Norden and Green (n.d.). published by Samuel Green, New-London. Daboll was considered one of the greatest mathematicians of his era. He first published his Schoolmaster’s Assistant in 1799. He expanded and updated the work in 1814. This is an 1824 edition. The works were often printed in soft cover which explains the bespoke soft calf leather binding on this book. It is a truly magnificent record of the era. The Mathematical Association of America has an informative essay on this author and his works*. We were particularly impressed to see fractions labelled as vulgar fractions. Our interest in the book was rather piqued by the book’s (presumably) first owner. In several places on the flysheets in the book, in beautiful old script, it is inscribed, Sidney M Luce of Brighton, Jan 16th 1824 as well as Brighton Feb 15th 1824 and Brighton Feb 6th 1825. On a genealogical site** we have found a record for what must be about Sidney. “Sidney M Luce 24 June 1811–7 February 1889 [MBLC-VYP – which looks to be an ancestry id number] When Sidney M Luce was born on 24 June 1811, in Massachusetts, United States, his father, Stephen Luce, was 28 and his mother, Mary Graves, was 22. He had at least 1 son with Olive E Graves. He lived in Brighton, Monroe, New York, United States for about 20 years. He died on 7 February 1889, at the age of 77, and was buried in Pittsford, Pittsford, Monroe, New York, United States.”. In the book it is also written “Varnal Luce”. On the same ancestry page we can see that Varnal was a son of Sidney and his spouse Olive E Graves, born in 1824-deceased. We wonder if Sidney became a school teacher or an accountant after relishing such a book hot off the press when he was 13 or so and if he ever visited Australia? The condition of the book is fair but really very good for a book that is c. 200 years old. We cannot see any missing or loose pages. Please look at the images carefully as they form part of the description. Materials: leather and paper, 240 pp plus 7 pp in Green with an appendix.
