Tanganyika Safari, S. Macdonald (1948)

MacDonald, S. (1948). Tanganyika Safari. Angus & Robertson, Sydney, NSW, Australia. 237 pp., 15 p. of plates

Sheila Scobie MacDonald (nee Mackenzie) 1880-1971 was a New Zealand author that moved to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in c. 1900 as a new bride* and was the author of several books, including “Sally in Rhodesia”. MacDonald spent 9 months on safari prior to the start of World War II in the lands that were called Tanganyika (now Tanzania). This was her second safari in Africa and her stories from this trip nearly didn’t make it into press as her diary was lost and she relied on material she had written to her sister to put the book together. This book covers the usual daily grinds of long treks but the interactions with the traditional owners of the lands and the account of the wildlife are the stand out features. This is a collector’s item for those that have travelled through these lands or for others that collect historical accounts of the people and wildlife mid 20th Century. MacDonald was an intrepid explorer, albeit with a colonial take on daily life, and an early travel-writer in Africa — she is credited with being the first white woman to scale Kilimanjaro in 1927**. The book is in good condition, with some wear on top of the spine. Pages are intact with an inscription to a previous owner on a front page Please look at the images carefully as they form part of the description. Materials: cloth bound and paper, 237 pp plus 15 pp of black and white images. Size: 19 x c. 12.5 cm Item code: 76-arm-10-MacDonald * https://wellington.recollect.co.nz/nodes/view/3167 ** https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/sep/30/kilimanjaro-ascent-london-girl-tanzania-1927
