We have discerned a revival in the air. Collecting Carlton Ware is back on! We were
collecting recently at The Barras in the east end of Glasgow when a wily store owner
noticed our distraction with his Carlton Ware displays. “Oh you are Australian are you..
is Carlton Ware big over there?” he asked. “Umm well we like it, so yes!” we replied. He
laughed. He then went on to say that about 10 years ago it was commanding a big
price in the UK and he has noticed recently more interest in pieces and thinks that
collecting Carlton Ware is having a revival. We think so too – particularly in the last
couple of months.
Carlton Ware for almost 100 years captured our hearts and imagination with their
beautiful ceramics from their Copeland Street factory on Stoke on Trent, UK. Have a
look at the on-line publication by Serpell (1999 2014 edition) for some magnificent
examples plus an exemplary text on how to identify and collect Carlton Ware. Some
fantastic Lustre ware sets with their demitasse cups are fetching high reserve prices in
the latest Melbourne auction scene we noticed – we will be keen to see what they
ultimately sell for. We have a Rouge Royal set in our own collection (not for sale!)– seen
here with vintage Japanese ware.

We have just listed THREE Carlton Ware trays in our online store The Hariet Emporium. The Bleu Royal with Vine and Grape leaf detail is just wonderful and the Icelandic poppy is uncommon and highly collectible too. Meanwhile the New Mikado tray with its exquisite detail is likely to sell soon too.
Another great site for information is a Carlton Ware collector’s corner – great information from the experts.
Hop over to our online store of retro, vintage and collectibles at The Hariet Emporium and enjoy looking at our variety of ceramics, Carlton Ware, glass, kitchenalia and books.
We hope you are enjoying the summer break and can find time to chill out with a new hobby such as Carlton Ware collecting.
The Hariets!
